Profile issue in terms of 'search' and 'selector'
February 24, 2008, 10:42:59 pm
Hi - thought I was getting my head around 'search' and 'in selector' and 'public user pages' but hit a bump.

I am wanting to include a field so that it shows as a column in the "search results table" but do not want it to then become a 'listing' as in I do not want users to be able to click the field value when viewing a contact in order to locate other contacts with the same value(s). (as in this case it is the 'street address field'.

But 'in selector' requires 'public user pages and listing' which seems to therefore require tht it becomes a clickable link.

What am I missing? Or is this just how it is? If the latter, then it would seem that being able to show the data in the column, but not have it clickable would be a helpful bonus.

hey peter:

i'm not very sure why that rule is, does not make a lot of sense (to me, right now). that terminology is quite old and inherited from drupal, we will fix it at some stage. I think the base rule should be: "if u want it clickable (Listings) it has to be searchable". The rest should not really matter too much. The "Public User Pages" part has more to do with permissioning (and who sees the data) and drupal has intermixed the two concepts which we borrowed :(

So for now, it is how it is :(. If you think this is important, please file an issue and we'll fix it when we redo permissioning (most likely 2.2). I can also give chris a tour of the code and he can potentially work on a patch for us if super important.

This is a very important issue for me too. In fact has caused me quite a number of headaches since I was thinking I must be doing something wrong. It's a bittersweet relief to discover that "it is how it is" and it's not me (though I still can't shake that feeling) For instance, I have a listing of organic farms in my state. How useful is it to be able to search for all the farms in the state that have "35 acres in pasture and 10 acres in crops" (ie 35+acres+in+pasture+and+10+acres+in+crops). Not only that, but clicking that link doesn't return "no results" as I'd expect, rather it returns a list of all the farms in my database (there's that feeling again).

I had posted a question about removing the clickable links in the view results but when I applied the fix, the listings were no longer visible by the public (and I want the public to see). So I went back to those crazy links.

I'm just thinking of the end user, the visitor to the site. The less inexplicable behavior my visitors encounter when they are here the better. I hope a patch can be arranged as I'm not sure of the timeline when CiviCRM 2.x and Drupal 6.x will be compatible, or how fast I can jump on all that upgrading as I'm just now putting the finishing touches on this CiviCRM 1.9 / Drupal 5.2 conglomeration and need to start planting.

I suspect we wont get back to addressing and fixing this till 2.2. However would be great for someone from the community to step up and figure out permissioning on this axis and how we want to deal with it / name it and also how it potentially integrates with ACL's if at all (not sure if it does)

p.s> i think software and farming are analagous :). A software release is similar to a crop harvested. Once released it is hard for us to extend / patch it. It makes sense for us always to focus on what we are planting now and in the future :)  and make sure we do good with regard to it
