World region: can it be customised ?

For some organisations, the way of grouping countries in regions is more detailed than the default, (eg, not put the middle east with north africa).

What is the purpose of that feature beside searching contacts on that criteria ?

Is there an admin interface I missed or shall I go directly in civicrm_worldregion ?

It's just another contacts segmentation way, used for searching, exactly as you suggested. There is no UI for changing the list of regions and their relationships with countries, so you will have to customise it directly in civicrm_worldregion.

We came across the same problem. Has the way how to edit the country regions changed since 2008? If not, could you guide us to where to find the civicrm_worldregion file?

The civicrm_worldregion table is one of the tables in your Civicrm mysql database.  You'll need to access it using something like phpmyadmin - that's what I use.

we have had one client where we needed to recook this table - a UI would be nice but can't imagine it would benefit many users - hmm then again, being able to do 'clustering' of countries would also be advantageous since afaik the postal requirements vary for different countries - in terms of whether postcode comes before/after city/province etc. So I could see a benefit of being able to do some groupings for this outcome too.

Another examples of clustering: make the distinction in europe between the members of the European Union, or the new member state, the countries working on joining...

On that topic, one feature that has been mentioned was being able to select countries that belong to several worldregion (all africa OR asia)
