Importing participants into CiviEvent using External ID
June 10, 2012, 02:27:12 pm
Hi,

I am trying to import participants into an existing event using the "Import Participants" feature.

According to the "Matching Participant Data to Contacts" pop-up help: "If you've stored a unique External Identifier for each contact in CiviCRM, you can include that value as a column in your import file". This is exactly what I want to do (I have all the event participation details using the External ID), but there doesn't seem to be an option to use it when selecting columns on the subsequent screen. All I can see listed is "Participant ID", which then results in errors because the IDs don't match. There doesn't seem to be an "External ID" option like there is when doing a normal import.

Am I missing something?

Version of CiviCRM is 4.1.2

I assume this is the correct forum to ask this question even though it is for CiviEvent?

Thanks,

Andy

Okay, so after extensive debugging, I found the problem, which was as simple as selecting "Skip" or "No Duplicate Checking" instead of "Update" on the initial import screen.

Update of entries does not allow a match based on External ID, presumably because it is only designed for updating people's entries rather than also allowing upload of new ones.

I have created a patch for a documentation update, see issue 10365.
