contact_id not valid - can't import membership information
June 10, 2012, 06:11:56 pm
I have an excel spreadsheet the contains my contacts and their membership information, and I was able to import to contacts.  Now I want import the membership information for each of the individuals.  But every time I try, and I have tried every way I know how many times, but it keeps saying "contact_id not valid" in the excel output file, b/c it shows that it matches all of the current contacts.  (see attached picture for civmember match field.)  What am I doing wrong?

hi - not v clear what you are trying to do - I dont see any Membership info in the fields you are trying to import based on the headers i see

are you saying that even if you set the 'contact id' column to match to 'contact ID' it fails?

The contact ID you see on the screen is the one from my excel database.  The rest of the membership field are listing, but I just didn't' get them in my screen capture.  I'm currently doing another process I just read on another post (http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=1404.0) which is:

1. Export the all (or a subset) of your contact records. You can use "export selected fields" to only output the Internal Contact ID and Name fields.

2. Export a sample membership record from CiviMember >> Find Members

3. Add the membership type, start and end date columns to your Contact Export using Excel or other spreadsheet program.

4. Now import the memberships for your contacts from CiviMember >> Import Members, using the Internal Contact ID as the "match to contacts" field.

Still getting errors, but I looks like I'm on to something now that I am using Civicrm contact ID internal number.

yes you need the contact id - or the first, last, email ie fields that are set to 'Match to contact' otherwise the Membership import doesn't know which Civi Contact to attach it to

First, Last and Email matching didn't work.  Always received the error contact_id not valid. but when I exported the contact ID, updated the excel spreadsheet it then worked.  Thanks for connecting.
