We have several large events each year and I need to be able to schedule the volunteers. I would like to be able to create a new volunteer tab in the contacts area. Within that tab I want to be able to select an event, select an area within that event enter a date and schedule them with predefined shifts. Does this seem like a good approach for this? If so any idea of how I can get started coding this? I tried to go into the hooks documentation here http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviCRM+hook+specification but I keep getting an error. Are there some good examples out there to get me started? Or how much would it cost for a developer to create this?

If each person only volunteers in one capacity for each event you might be able to add custom fields on the participant record (& use different roles - although I think you can only register once per event & not twice under 2 roles)
