Server Error Sending confirmation email with Multiple Registrants

I have an event registration for a golf tournament.  I have allowed the user to register multiple participants.  When you register more than one participant I am getting the following error:

 HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.

If I remove the send confirmation email the error goes away!

What are you versions for Drupal, CiviCRM, MySQL and PHP?

That is the issue. On the About CiviCRM page you can read the Technical Requirements which include:

    PHP 5.2.1+ (PHP 5.3 is supported starting with CiviCRM 3.2) with PCRE support

But are you sure you really have PHP 4.0.1? That version is 12 years old....

sorry it is php 5.3.8 - so I need to upgrade to civicrm 3.2?

Upgrading is most probably a good idea. I would upgrade to 4.1.3 actually. Unless you have a particular reason not to.
