Contact Import
June 21, 2012, 10:40:32 am
I'm new at using CiviCRM, and admittedly don't really know what I'm doing a lot. I've been figuring it out so far, but I've run into a problem importing contacts. When attempting to import contacts from a csv, I am always getting an error of "Invalid value for field(s) : Addressee must be one of the configured format options. Check Administer >> Option Lists >> Addressee for valid values". This error invalidates my whole import and nothing gets imported. The file I am trying to import from is a guest list that contains numerous data fields about the guests at the event. I am presuming that the issue is with importing the names (which are in two different cell fields) as contact names. I've tried looking at the valid values and reformatting the field headings to conform, but it has not worked. How can I fix this so the information will be correctly imported into CiviCRM as contacts?

Thanks in advance!

the error suggests you are importing something in to the 'addressee' field - is that true

have you tried a sample without that column?

I was attempting to upload the list into contacts so that they would come out as households with the name fields and contact info all bundled into one household per entry. My best guess was that names correlated to addressees, but it wouldn't work.

I did try to import the list without the two fields for names, and it worked, importing just the emails, which I had selected. It even weeded out duplicates, although now I have a few hundred emails to match with info, and my goal was to avoid doing hundreds of manual entries. The fact that it works points to addressee fields being the problem, but I have been unable to figure out how to label or format them correctly. Looking at the options, I tried renaming the labels for the columns, which didn't work, and tried renaming an entry with the exampled formatting, which also failed.

Hopefully this isolates where my problem is, any ideas?

Addressee field isn't something that most people would be importing - this is what does the 'Dear Jack' type 'addressing' - not related to a street address.

Households are a Contact Type - and one connects Individuals to the Household via a Relationship
I would expect that if you have a bunch of contacts to import and you want to set them up as Households then
- import as Households
- then import the Individuals
- include a field with the household name and set that to 'relationships = household member + Name' (not sure of exact name of field)
