upgrading Joomla and Civi - which comes first?

Hey folks. Some noob questions here.
I'm running Joomla 1.6.3 and CiviCRM 4.0.4

Which should I upgrade first? Joomla or Civi?
How far should I upgrade Joomla? Does Civi work with Joomla 2.5? Should I stick with Joomla 1.6?

Yes.

I would not recommend that.
