Creating a combined report

How do I make a report that joins Contributions and Grants?

Members from local clubs are donating and the clubs are receiving grants.
Both Contributions and Grants have custom fields so we can assign each record to a specific club.
I need to make a monthly balance report that shows all donations and grants for each club.

I know how to make SQL joins/unions etc. but haven't made any reports in CiviCRM yet...
