Phone extension not available to include in profile
June 28, 2012, 04:55:08 am
This is largely cosmetic, but I'm working with a prospect who's evaluating CiviCRM as a replacement for their existing member database. In trying to create a new profile to use in place of the standard "Name and Address" with work contact info in place of home, I noticed that it doesn't seem possible to select the phone extension field when creating a new custom profile.

I'm running CiviCRM 4.1.3 and have tried it on the demo system also and wasn't able to find the field, either. I'm assuming this is an oversight and there's no underlying reason it was implemented this way. It's fairly low-impact, but should I log a bug/feature request?

Hello axon-obrien,

I tried a couple of ideas on the demo site, and hit on a fairly easy way to fix this.

1. Go to Administer-->Customize Data and Screens-->Custom Fields. find a set of custom fields that is used for individual and select view and edit custom fields. Now select Add Custom field, and create a field labeled Phone extension. Data and Input field type should be Alphanumeric, Text. Make it searchable if you like, select active and save.

2. Now return to the profile you need this field on and select fields. Add a field, selecting Individual and Phone extension from the dropdowns. Make sure you set it's visibility to Public, or an anonymous user will not be able to see it in order to fill it out. Select active, and select save.

You now have the Phone Extension field in your profile.

Cheers,
Jason
