Locking the Name Field for all profiles
July 02, 2012, 12:55:39 am
I am working on a CivicRM project and they would like the First Name and Last Name to be locked no matter what.  Currently if you select a profile you have a edit link you can change the names, even though I have changed this to read only in just about every place I can find.  We want our volunteers to be able to use that, however not allow them to edit the First Name or the last name.  They will still have to be able to create new individuals however though.

We also don't want them to be able to edit emails, just add new ones. This is not as big of a deal, but it would be appreciated if we could get help with that.

I have been searching for about two weeks through the wiki's and what not and haven't found a solution.  I have seen somethings about using hooks to work through this, but after reading about 30 hours of information about this I am lost.

I am mostly a website designer not a developer, so that might be part of the issue.  Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated.

hi - it may help us help you if you make a profile with the same settings on the demo site so we can understand the problem

The settings are the same as a fresh install of CivicRM.  The profile is labeled Name and Address (I'm assuming this is the same as a new individual contact) so it includes First Name Last Name Address, Email, Phone etc.  The only change I have made to it is setting View Only to yes on First Name and Last Name.  However if I run the search on the top left, select the person I am looking for and hit Edit I am still able to change the first name and last name.  No I know I can turn the Edit off for these people, but the Address and Email still needs to be able to be edited.  Would I just remove the ability to edit and then just create two custom fields with these settings?  This would make it uneditable, however then what do I do about the addresses when I try to run mailing labels?

Maybe this would give a little bit more help.  Let me know.  I appreciate any help as I have about three organizations that are very interested in the product.  I have read the CivicRm manuals, as well as the Using CivicRM book by Joseph Murray, and still not finding a solution to this.

Thanks much!!

If you go to the Profile - can't you set the First Name field to be 'read only'?

Yeah I see what your saying about that.  That isn't the problem.  This might be better.  If I go to Administer, Customize Data and Screens, Display Preferences, and look under editing contacts, I have a list of choices.  All of those I would love to be able to edit.  The one I want absolutely nobody to have rights to edit is the name.  So once an individual is created, I want them to be locked.

Thanks for the response!!  I greatly appreciate it!!
