"There are no case records for this contact."... But there are..!
July 02, 2012, 08:21:10 am
Hi,

I'm just implementing CiviCase. For some reason, when I create a case it correctly increments the number of cases in the contact's Case tab, but no cases are shown. There's just a message to say that "There are no case records for this contact."

Any suggestions??

I'll post a solution if I come up with anything...

Check if your xml configuration files are 100%? If there is an activity type or relationship type that is not exactly correct (spelling) the case does not show up even if it is in the file.....that is exactly the kind of behaviour your post is suggesting :-)

It appears that this occurs if a case is created without any activities - something which it is entirely possible to do.

At first glance I would be tempted to think that this is a fault... Perhaps the wrong kind of join in some SQL somewhere..?

Unless, that is, it's just me that has this problem(?)

I have not experienced the problem yet, but we do not have cases without activity. What would be the use case for having cases without activities? If there is a good use case I would certainly log the problem as a bug on the Issue Tracker?

I can certainly imagine someone creating a case as a place holder for something that they are due to do. If there isn't a use case, surely it should (ideally) be impossible to create a case without any activities?

Of course, this might just be a fault on my installation (although I've found no other bugs and everything is up to date).

No I do think it is a bug, the use case would determine if it is a minor one (better practise) or a higher priority one (use case can not be supported). Can you log it on the Issue Tracker?

If you don't include Open Case in the standard timeline then you would never capture some of the data entered at case creation. The Open Case activity and case creation are equivalent, so if anything I'd say it should either implicitly include the Open Case whether you put it in the xml or not, or not let you create a case if it's not in the xml.

Thanks for that demeritcowboy :-) you indeed need the open case activity to actually 'correctly' create the case. However, if there is a use case for having a case without activities (which I do not see  ;D) we could change.....and in case not showing any errors and simply not showing the case is not a very elegant solution imo :-)

Ah, I see..! It sounds as though my very simple test XML is too simple..!

Great, sorted. It seems that this is about as simple as CiviCase XML can get:

Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1" ?>

<CaseType>
  <name>Grant Request</name>
  <ActivityTypes>
    <ActivityType>
      <name>Open Case</name>
      <max_instances>1</max_instances>
    </ActivityType>
    <ActivityType>
      <name>Grant Application</name>
    </ActivityType>
  </ActivityTypes>

  <ActivitySets>
    <ActivitySet>
      <name>standard_timeline</name>
      <label>Standard Timeline</label>
      <timeline>true</timeline>
      <ActivityTypes>
        <ActivityType>
          <name>Open Case</name>
          <status>Completed</status>
        </ActivityType>
      </ActivityTypes>
    </ActivitySet>
  </ActivitySets>
</CaseType>

(I do have an activity type besides Open Case, but a case wouldn't be much use without at least one case type - and it would make sense to add a way to close the case, too!)

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Yes you probably also want the ones Change Case Status, Change Case Type, Change Case Start Date, and Link Cases.
I can add this to the wiki.
