Can't batch update to overwrite email to null

Hi,

Trying to remove the email address from over 400 records. When I use the Batch Update Via Profile it all appears to work but when I return to the records, the email is still there.

Is there any other way I can batch overwrite so that the email field is null?

possibly not through the UI - would it work to convert them all to xyz@xyz.com and then run a query in the DB to remove them if you have access to DB.

Other options via UI (if deleting is not the ONLY acceptably solution) is to set them all to 'do not email' and/or 'no bulk mail' assuming both are possible via the Batch update process or from the 'actions' button (haven't been to check.
