Terminology
July 08, 2012, 06:45:57 pm
Hi all,

I'm wondering if we can fine-tune our terminology a bit since there is a bit of confusion.

In particular the 'multisite' term refers both to the use of a domain reference in the database for segmentation & the hierarchical permissioning module. Here are some of the terms floating around
- multisite
- multiorg
- chapter based install

1) multi-domain implementation(many domains with segration of things like payment  processors & membership types but no inbuilt permissioning)
2) multi-level implementation - the implemetation of the hierarchical permissioning module on top of #1. #1 can stand alone but #2 requires #1.

At the drupal level it's possible to have what drupal calls a multisite (shared codebase) or a domain module based implementation where several sites share the same database. So, perhaps there's no advantage of improving the terminology on #1 as I can't think of a name that doesn't clash with drupal.

But, if we could settle on a consistent different term for the permissioning system (multi-level for lack of a better option) I think it would be helpful

The sites share the same codebase, not necessarily the same database. But I would say that this is an old and established Drupal term so perhaps it would be prudent to use a different term here.
