What happens to recurring payments when credit card expires?

I've searched the forums for this but can't find anything.

I understand Civi doesn't store card details but sets up recurring payments with Paypal. Presumably then Paypal makes recurring payments from then on.

Does Paypal inform Civi each time it makes a new payment on a recurring order? Or does Civi independently record new contributions based on the original recurring setup? If so, how does Civi know when payments have stopped because the credit card has expired?

yes paypal informs civi on every recurring payment contribution. civi does not keep track / record new contribs

paypal informs civi if credit card has expired / no longer works and the payment is cancelled
