Paypal Advanced vs PayPal Pro
July 09, 2012, 12:59:45 pm
I am considering biting the bullet and upgrading from PayPal Standard to PayPal Pro.  PayPal Standard's payment screen is increasingly hiding the ability to pay via credit card vs a PayPal account.  Donors are getting confused and starting to abandon the process.  I have avoided PayPal Pro up until now because of the monthly fees ($30/month) and SSL certificate/security audit requirements.

I discovered, however, that PayPal is now offering a cheaper option called PayPal Advanced ($5 month).  It allows you to keep customers on your site and doesn't require an SSL certificate.  In talking to PayPal, it sounds like it uses the PayFlow Link API.  In looking at the CiviCRM documentation, it looks like a PayFlow Link extension for exists http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC41/PayFlow+Link although the download links for the code aren't working.

  • Does anyone know if their is a working Payflow Link extension for CiviCRM 4.1 (where can you download it?)
  • Is anyone using, or planning to use, PayPay Advanced with CiviCRM?
  • Finally, if we do have to go the PayPal Pro route because of the absence of a PayPal Advanced solution, I would greatly appreciate any feedback from small non-profits on how burdensome PCI compliance is.

Thanks for any response.

Hi chapmanla,

I don't know anything about Paypal Advanced, but we just set up Paypal Pro for a client and took it through PCI compliance checks. I'd advise the following:

1. I think PCI compliance will be required either way if you keep users onsite because you're taking their credit card details.
2. We didn't find PCI compliance that burdensome. It took about 3 days of my time learning about it, laiasing with our chosen Vendor (SecurityMetrics), and filling out the questionnaire. SecurityMetrics asked us for £75/year to run compliance checks, the results of which we sent straight to Paypal who were happy with it.

Hope that's helpful :)

Thanks, Barnacle, for your response.  I am still hoping to avoid the PCI route if we can - we are a small, all-volunteer organization.

I am pretty confident that PayPal Advanced does not require PCI-compliance.  It uses i-frames, so that the tranactional process occurs on PayPal's pages.  For this reason, it would be very attractive option for us.

None of this would be necessary if PayPay didnt make it so obtuse and confusing to use credit cards with PayPal Standard.

Chapmania,

I am also looking to move away from PayPal Standard to PayPal Advanced for the same reasons.  I'm seeing several pending payments when the registrant drops out at the PayPal part of the transaction (for various causes).  Have you made any progress using the payflowlink?

Note that wrting  a payment processor or getting a developer to write a payment processor is relatively easy and cheap (15-30 hours?). Its also a great way to give back to the community for all the open source stuff that you build your org on :)

Andrew is checking if he can upgrade to 4.1.x as remote extensions work better in 4.1.x - if you already have 4.1.x you should see payflow link as an installable extension - although I'm still testing the install from there.

There is another one called OMNGateway - that was sponsored by OMNGateway & they tell me it's a well priced option - but I'm not sure how you sign up for it yet - possibly through First Data.
