Activity fields and Profiles
July 10, 2012, 01:45:43 pm
Can Activity fields be used in a profile? I created a new activity type Project Proposal. And would like website visitors to be able to propose a project and supply details. I have not had any success in creating a profile that includes activity fields and then using the html on WordPress. I get the error: "Profile search, view and edit are not supported for Profiles which include fields for more than one record type." I have tried removing all but one activity field and that doesnt help. I've tried an alphanumeric text custom field and a note custom field. neither worked and both resulted in same error.

thanks kindly.

No they cannot be used in a create profile setting.

However there is a workflow, where u can edit and update activities via an activity profile via scheduled reminders. This makes the BIG assumption that the activities have been pre-created

Would be great to continue developing that model and allow "actvity profiles" to be exposed for create/view/search etc.

Thanks Lobo for once again succintly answering my question. i truly appreciate it.

Would a workaround - granted clumsy- be to create custom fields for "household" record type? This would enable website visitors to propose a project with preliminary details and be linked to it. Then a case is created for each project. A case role as "proposer" is created for the individual. Then as the project grows and is further developed, details are added to the different custom activity types (that I would create) and workflows may be added.  Can an individual be associated with more than one household?

Our needs are to be able to allow individuals submit preliminary ideas and details on potential ecological restoration projects. So I need a create profile function that enables capturing of those kinds of details. An individual can propose more than one project. And most individuals in our CRM wont propose any projects but volunteer. We would then like to expose the case on line to the people involved and let them track the activities (probably password protected page).

Any glaring reasons why this wont work?

your needs seem to be a wee bit complex (which is not a bad thing)

might be worth exploring doing your site in drupal, the three big things you get compared to WP include:

1. integration with webform and the ability to collect data across multiple objects. webform is way more powerful than profile data collection

2. integration with views. allows you to expose your data in different ways

3. a better permissioning model

I think over time, civi WP will integrate with gravity forms and/or other WP form plugins. but for now, WP does not have them

If the below route works for you, give it a shot. In general workarounds sometime dont work great a few months down the road

Webform also lets you create update Activities with whatever Activity plus Contact fields you want

Gravity Forms integration would be wonderful. Two thumbs up for that idea!
