Gamification
July 11, 2012, 07:03:33 am
Has anyone done any work on gamification of the constituent community? For example, volunteers who work more than x events get a badge or people with $x in donations get placed into a special donor group?

Have you implemented it in CiviCRM?

Thanks!

This was done extensively in an app called 5ivepoints, which has since disappeared from the market.
I believe it was a drupal based app-
The processes to sign up and activate volunteers were very simple- as was the admin dashboard.
What was refreshing about using it- was that so many standard tasks were simplified- through a managers dashboard-
which made running a campaign as simple as using facebook.
Unfortunately - the app was pulled off the market.
I think gamification was proved by the Obama campaigns- it's a valuable addition. Thanks for suggesting it being added to Civi!

We're going to be looking at this over the next 12 months after we launch our online community and user profiles. Haven't thought about exactly how yet though.

I think Paul Delbar might be looking at something similar too.

We've done a gamification layer for apopo.org, on top of CiviCRM (containing contacts, contributions and memberships) and largely embedded in the Joomla CMS on top. Reason for the hybrid is the amount of rich media we need to add, and the need for flexible data structures, CiviCRM not being built to make that an easy thing.

Basically, we wrap an object layer around the gamer (Joomla user linked to Civi contact) and the game subject, which can be a membership, contribution or contact in our approach. Of course, you could gamify just about anything ... there's a scenario engine which allows you to define a series of steps, with delays, each step containing one or more actions (send an email, write on the user's wall, give a badge, change the avatar, ...) and allows user choice to be integrated using what we call trigger URLs, which drive things like scenario change, parameter setting for gamer and subject, .. And then badges, points for different aspects (for impact on humanity, for achievements in the game, for social interaction, ...).

It's currently running around 5k recurring donors and a bunch of one-time donors as well.

@Pdelbar-
So I'm assuming your solution is totally Joomla dependent- and has no way of being easily incorporated into the core?
I admire your ingenuity.
Thanks for the update- and proving it can be done.
