has anyone had any success integrating with a standalone civicrm from an external asp.net application?

i need to authenticate members who are visiting an asp.net site, and allow them to make edits to their profile data.

Hello. There is no longer any "standalone CiviCRM." There once was but it was discontinued long ago. CiviCRM must run inside of either Drupal, Joomla or WordPress. To run CiviCRM, you also need PHP and MySQL.

What you are asking for is not directly possible, but you could of course create your own forms for viewing and updating data by fetching and then storing data into CiviCRM via the public API.
