CiviCRM based job descriptions / roles
July 16, 2012, 09:48:57 am
A couple of times recently, I've been asked by clients to help them come up with job descriptions for people whose day to day role will involve a significant amount of work with CiviCRM.

These are clients that are using CiviCRM to such an extent / in such a sophisticated way that:

1) it doesn't make financial sense for them to outsource all that 'clicking'
2) they need to start building up internal knowledge and skill about their CiviCRM

They tend to be clients where the smooth operation of CiviCRM is essential to their business (often they have lots of public interaction, etc.). and they need someone internally that be 'on their side' and build up technical knowledge how their system works, etc.

I don't think they need to be developers or system administrators since they'll be outsourcing any coding and hosting, but they should be bright and technically minded.

Does anyone have (or know anyone that has) experience of this that they'd be up for sharing? i'm interested in the things that worked well, things that didn't, looking at already existing JDs, etc.

I'm also interested in whether the time has come where we can say 'CiviCRM experience essential' (I don't think it has come yet), or if that will ever be necessary.

Michael

some of the ones we have come up with so far include:
  • project management - plan and manage delivery of releases of the system; prioritising features for each release, testing and signing off releases
  • system design - work in partnership with the staff team and service providers to develop specifications, requirements, etc. based on client needs.
  • implementation - implement new features, and outsource implementation where internal skills and capacity do not exist
  • provide internal training to staff on the system, and help with trouble shooting, bug reporting, etc.
  • be the first point of contact / internal knowledgebase for questions about the system.
  • experience working with CRM (preferably CiviCRM)
  • experience working with CMS (preferably Drupal and WordPress)
  • experience thinking strategically about technology choices and project managing web based projects
