I imagine this has to do with the manual configuration needed at some stages to install CiviCRM, but I think it would be really great if we could get CiviCRM listed in the WordPress plugins directory!

Our application was politely rejected on the grounds that CiviCRM integrates with Wordpress but isn't actually a Wordpress plugin.  In the words of the Wordpress team it is "a software package that far exceeds Wordpress itself in both size and complexity and interacts with other CMS"
Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.
