Creating an Alumni group

I am wondering what the best way to allow users to sign up for an alumni group would be? I would like to create a CiviCRM profile that has all of the required information that anyone wishing to be in this Alumni group would fill out. I would like anyone that fills out this profile to then become a member of the group ‘Alumni’. This would then put them on our Alumni mailing list and enable them to see other alumni and specific contact information that others are not privy to.

I’ve created the profile but I’m not sure what to do with it at this point. I don’t want to make it a ‘Drupal User Registration’ profile because it will only pertain to a limited number of our users, I don’t want everyone that fills out a Drupal registration to have to fill this out also (obviously). I would prefer to create a webpage with this profile embeded as a form where a user would be directed to and fill out the form. If that person already has a Drupal account then the new information simply gets added to their profile. If they do not have an account the can create a new on off of that form.

What is the best way to do this? Do I need to create an Event or Membership to tie this to? I could simply use Drupal’s Forms module but I would like this information to be integrated with that users’ CiviCRM contact info and not stored in a disconnected Drupal Form elsewhere.

Can you just provide them with a link to the /edit/ version of the profile if they are logged in?
