Troubles with Activity assignment emails

hi Folks,

I'm having trouble sending the activity assignment emails.  No matter how I change the settings, the activity email simple don't reach their recipient.   All other emails from my installation of CiviCRM are working fine.

The mail.log from postfix says that they are getting sent to the smtp server.  The parameters look right.  Nothing goes out and I never get an error code from the SMTP server. 

I have tried logging the email to a file.  They look right there...

Can someone clue me in about where the settings are for the activity assignment emails?

I've spent most of a day on this and I really need it to work.

can you confirm you have Notify Activity Assignees checked/ticked at


civicrm/admin/setting/preferences/display

"When enabled, contacts who are assigned activities will automatically receive an email notification with a copy of the activity"

yup, it is ticked.

I'm thinking now that the problem is with my ISP.  The mail gets to the ISP smtp server and an ACK comes back positive.  The mail just never goes on from there.  There might be some illegal characters in it.  I've got a request in to them for help.

I used tcpdump to track what was actually being exchanged with the ISP.  The command was,

sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -s 0 -n -w AnyFileName.cap

Then I would send the email, stop the dump and open the dump file with wireshark.  I couldn't see any difference between emails that go thru and email that go nowhere.

I'm new to this CivicRM.  It has some great features but, wow, is it finicky.  I'm afraid to upgrade to the latest version because at least now I understand my current problems....

your ISP smtp server is eating the emails and your calling civicrm finicky because of that?

that logic does not seem to make sense :(

yeah, good point.  kind of a non sequitur, isn't it?  Sorry about that.  Please don't get me wrong.  Y'all have a strong program here with wonderful features.  It is amazing what you've gotten done for the good of all of us.

I'm 115 hours into the set up now.  I've still got some major problems to sort out.  I'm hoping to wrap it up in another 120 hours.  This is, by far, the hardest software install I've ever done.

I'd hoped I could get it done in 80 hours.  That's ok though because a functioning system will definitely be worth the work.

OK, finally found the problem.

The activity email template (joomla:  Mailings>Message Templates>System Workflow Messages) was corrupted.  It was dumping trash into the email header.  The ISP deleted the message from the queue since it couldn't make sense of it.

I don't know how this happened.  The template not listed as edited.  I edited it some, saved it, then used the revert to default choice to clear up the problem. 

All is well now.
