Configured to accept AmEx, but AmEx not accepted

Both civicRM and Authorize.net are set up to accept AmEx.  However, when I submit a membership registration page using an AmEx card, I get this error:
Code: [Select]
    Payment Processor Error message:
    4:28 The merchant does not accept this type of credit card.

Visa and MC work fine.

If both are set up properly, why would I be getting this error?

as the error message says, we are just printing what the payment processor told us. You might want to talk to the payment processor. You might also need to check that we send the same codes that they expect for an AmEX card

Since Authorize.net is basically a middle man in the transaction process. You might want to also check with your merchant bank to make sure that they also have your account setup to handle AmEx.

The odd thing about this is that the client is using the same Authorize.net account to accept AmEx on another site, and they've been able to accept AmEx on that site without a problem.  That's why I posted this question here.
