Mail sent to unexistent recipients don't bounce back [Bounce Processing related]
August 07, 2012, 07:27:15 am
Hail everyone,
I'm going mad on this problem I've encountered in using CiviMail.

I've correctly configured my bounce address, following a very comprehensive guide (it seems I cannot link it, btw it was something like 'user/initial-set-up/email-system-configuration')

I've setup the account on POP, since I was unable to make it work on IMAP.
Checking mail with a common client on the POP protocol works good.

However, when I send some mass mail to some valid along with some surely not valid e-mail addresses, these last one don't bounce back on me. The bouncing address is simply empty...
I've tried 3 types of invalid addresses:
- <jibberish>@<knowndomain>.it
- <jibberish>@<jibberish>.it
- <unused_user>@gmail.com

Every single one of them should bounce back on me... nonetheless, none one of them do so...

Can someone help me sort it out before my head explode?

I appreciate your help,
regards.
-----------
Domenico

Your profile information shows that you are using 4.1.2. Bounce processing was a known issue in 4.1.2 and there was a patch. If you are still using it you should upgrade to 4.1.5 to get the fix as it has security fixes as well.

Dear britebyte,
thanks for your reply.

I've successfully upgraded my CiviCRM to 4.1.5 in hope to make the bounce processing working.

Unfortunately, I'm encountering a problem that I can't solve, atm.
Whenever I try to re-use or look at the report of a mass mail, Civi shows me an ACCESS DENIED page...

Even enable debugging shows no error... any clue?

Not sure if this is your case but I usually get that error if there is misconfiguration in the dns and/or apache redirects so that the www gets removed from the front of the url or it gets added on when it shouldn't. If so the best thing is to fix the dns and redirects or temporarily, you can just manually add the www to the front of the url.

I don't know what was wrong... but now it's working

I've tryied several things. I will list them here, maybe someone else will found them useful one day.
  • restore entire drupal DB
  • restore 4.1.2 civi DB
  • removed and replaced old sites/all/modules/civicrm with the 4.1.5 WITHOUT removing sites/default/files/civicrm
  • remove sites/default/files/civicrm to workaround blank page on upgrading my civi DB to 4.1.5
  • switched from windows to linux (ofc this could mean nothing, but I suspect the permission errors could be somewhat related to cookies, session, or other shit, resetted while switching my working OS

I've done all of this several times, and I cannot recall the order... Have a try and good luck ;)

Oh, and very thanks for the help!
