Multiple e-mail types selection
February 29, 2008, 08:36:07 am
Hi there,

it would be very nice if I had the option to create multiple e-mail types (just like IM), like work, private, etc.
We need it to save the childs' email in their contact as well as the e-mail of their parents. On the e-mail form we should be able to select the type of mail to send the mail to. So after selecting the contacts, we select the option for work/private/secondary/primary/all/etc and then send the mail.

Why would we want this? We organise summercamps for children. We want to e-mail only the parents, or only the children. This is not possible now, it always selects the first e-mail. To solve this problem we could do the following: create a household for every address, even if we only have one child in this household. We can save the parents e-mail in the  household and the childs e-mail in their own account, but this is not very practical.

What do you think?

From a database / model perspective, creating a separate contact record for the parent and child is much better. Use a custom field to distinguish between the two. Use a relationship to link the two records. You can also create a household record to encapsulate both records and hold things like postal address.

We still need to improve the workflow and power when people use relationships and householding. But in the long run the above model is better (IMO)

Hi lobo,

I agree totally with you. However, in our situation this is not really manageable, because we don't have the parent's data (like name).
Apart from our situation, it would be handy to select (just like phonenumber and IM) which type of e-mail it is. Would be useful for anyone, in my opinion.

And if this would be possible, it could help us solving our problem, by creating a type of e-mail called 'mail of parents'.

This is not on our roadmap for the short/medium term. If important to you, please consider submitting a patch to civicrm to do the needful. Attaching the patch to this forum topic will enable other folks who have similar needs to use it

thanx
