Showing Contact ID in the tooltip on search results
August 12, 2012, 04:43:06 pm
Seems this is straightforward to do via by editing the civicrm_uf_field table and adding a new row to the 'Summary Overlay' group

Any support for having this in core?

Pete - You don't need to edit civicrm_uf_field to add or remove fields in the Summary Overlay. You can do this from Administer > Customize Data & Screens > Profiles > Reserved Profiles tab. The "concept" of the Summary Overlay is that folks can adjust the contents to show the fields that are important to their organization. That said, if you and others who talk to users all the time think that having Contact ID in the default set would be useful to a significant number of end-users - it's an easy patch.

Well there you go - a new one on me. Thanks

We do find a lot of client frustration with how obscure the Contact ID is - hidden in amongst the url or down at the bottom - hence having pushed in the past to have it up on same line as the display name - but on far right - nice and large.

I think it is probably more useful as a default field in the overlay than eg Birth Date is.

A bigger issue is probably how hard it is for Admins to find a contact based on having just the ID number.

Would be most awesome to just be able to put the id number in to the Quick Search box.

We end up having to make special blocks in which they can do this.

I train users how to form the URL mostly, but a more high tech solution would be better. :)

Pete and Hershel - for my education ... what are some common use cases where end-users need to look up a contact record by contact ID?

I do a lot of data massaging and data cleaning. I write to a client, for example:

Quote
Yes, I found 342 records with phone numbers of "-" so I will delete them. For example, see contact ID 45 and 229.

Or I send them a query output as CSV and then they have the contact ids also. I do this all the time.

Yep ditto - or they do an export - that includes ID

They see something odd on a row for a contact and want to edit it.

They have to do something like the following

- see if they have an existing contact in 'last viewed'
- click on it
- overwrite the ID in the url with the ID on the spreadsheet

Or if you have a spreadsheet of contacts with names and IDs. If the name is John Doe and there are 10 of them, it's easier to find the one you want via his ID...

seems like we could pretty easily handle this request - putting an integer into the quicksearch box and pressing enter could just take you to that contact.

not rocket science either, just mentioning it ;)

Better yet, show the name of the contact who's id you just typed. Pressing return or clicking on the autocomplete result will both take you to the record (keeping consistent with current behavior).
Just added this feature to 4.3 in trunk :)

Excellent. I agree that the autocomplete should remain for integers also. Not all users even know you can click Return when in that box. :)
