No event confirmation mail sent - SMTP errors display - yet test mail sends

After purchasing an event ticket, rather than a confirmation mail being sent, the following error displays

An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
authentication failure [SMTP: Invalid response code received from SMTP server while sending email. This is often caused by a misconfiguration in Outbound Email settings. Please verify the settings at Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Outbound Email (SMTP). (code: 535, response: Incorrect authentication data)]

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

    Your SMTP Username or Password are incorrect.
    Your SMTP Server (machine) name is incorrect.
    You need to use a Port other than the default port 25 in your environment.
    Your SMTP server is just not responding right now (it is down for some reason).
    The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.

Yet when I follow the instructions and go to Administer > System Settings > Outbound Mail, all the settings are correct and the test mail sends correctly.

Anyone come across a similar issue and had any luck solving it?
You did not answer the verification questions correctly - sigh

Just to add, I do not think it is a SMTP problem, as when I go into the edit participant record, I am able to check the box 'Send Confirmation and Receipt', on saving the record the confirmation mail sends.

You did not answer the verification questions correctly - sigh

We have a similar issue.  The error message doesn't appear for us but the system hasn't been automatically sending event confirmation emails for the last 8 months and we have no idea why! Confirmations go out for free events, but not for paid ones. A confirmation email also goes out if I manually go into the record and tick Send Confirmation Email.

We are finding similar issues.  Event confirmation do go out along with donation confirmations.  We are having it be an issue with the TELL a Friend Function.

The rror does not occur when the contribution is zero eg a free membership
