Could one of you care to explain what is polling or protocol?

Protocol *       
    Name of the protocol to use for polling.   imap, pop3, maildir, etc.

I am trying to send out the very first mass email but I have not received one in my verizon email. All I know that verizon uses POP3.  The CiviMail showed there are 2 opened and 1 clicked out of 19 receipents.

Could you explain to me what should I do with Protocol?  It appears that I have to identify each receipent's email protocol acceptance and group them accordingly?

I need more instructions on this part before I make it all work.

the mail protocol specifies how u receive email, specifically the bounce messages which civi will retrieve and process in the cron job
