Custom Event Details -- Limiting to one event type
August 20, 2012, 07:14:48 am
I am just starting with civiCRM and trying to see if it meets our needs.  NBATC maintains 90 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and members contribute works of manual labor on work hikes.  It seemed that a WORK HIKE would be a type of event and I am able to add hours as a custom field in the event details.

My question is can I limit the display of that custom field to a WORK HIKE and not have it appear in other types of events?  Or should a work hike be some other object.

yes, custom fields can extend events of a specific type. So create an event type called "Work Hike"

On a related but tangential note, i'm hiking the NH section of the AT later this week :)

Hi John,

Lobo is correct that you can create custom fields limited to an event type.  However, if the hours should be per participant, and not per participant, you will create custom fields for a participant record (which can also be limited by event type).

That is, if a particular hike has 50 hours associated with it, create a custom field on the event.

However, if the hike has Alice, Ben, and Carl each contributing 3, 4, and 5 hours respectively, you'll create a custom field on the participant record.
