Renewing Memberships and Relationships
August 22, 2012, 01:03:41 pm
Hello,

we've got a fairly simple requirement for our CiviCRM implementation. We want to offer paid for individual and family memberships on a fixed yearly cycle. We're having trouble with renewing family memberships though. Here's the scenario...

Alice and Bob are a family. Their two (individual) contact records are linked with a relationship 'in family with' which has contact type A set to individual and contact type B set to individual. The relationship is set so that Alice can view and update information for Bob and Bob can view and update information for Alice. The family membership type has the 'in family with' relationship type set on it. So far so good.

We then assign a family membership to Alice. Bob also gets this membership through the 'in family with' relationship with Alice. When the membership expires, if Alice comes along and renews it, Bob also receives the newly renewed membership. The problem we're seeing is when Bob tries to renew the family membership. If Bob renews, then only Bob's membership becomes current. The membership doesn't get updated for Alice through the relationship with Bob.

Have I just setup the relationship wrong? Or not understood how they're supposed to work? Or is that a bug? I've shied away from using households to model this because you can't seem to do a self service membership renewal for a household.  Any pointers gratefully received!

We're using CiviCRM 4.1.5 and Drupal 6.26. (Maybe I should try CiviCRM 4.2 as that was releases yesterday.)

Thanks.

Em.

sorry don't know. i would be cautious about relationships with both ends the same. One of Bob or Alice will still be A and the other B - and I think that the inherited membership works from B to A.

I think you may need a 'family' membership that is bought 'on behalf' by an individual.

problem then is you need both/all family members to have the right relationship (which you can probably best achieve through webform-civicrm)

and you need anyone who should be getting the renewal email to meet the following criteria in order to be able to have the 'family' prefilled on the renewal form
- be a current employee of 'the family'
- have a 'permissioned relationship' with 'the family'

Certainly the renewal process for 'on behalf of' has several things still on the wish list to make it much simpler to manage

Hi petednz,

thanks for the reply.

For a family membership that's bought 'on behalf' of an individual I'd need to setup each family as an organization wouldn't I?

I think it might be easier to only allow membership renewals from the primary family member and not accept a renewal from anyone that gets their membership through a relationship.

Agreed that would be much easier. Renewal requests then get sent out just to that primary member
