Issues configuring CiviSMTP to work with an AWS hosted web server
September 01, 2012, 10:40:10 pm
I'm working with a long time CiviSMTP user that's about to migrate their web server to AWS.

I see no reason not to keep on using CiviSMTP; it works fine and I'm aware with Shane et al do for the community.  But I wonder what Shane's experience has been with connecting with servers hosted inside of Amazon's cloud.

We can certainly create the appropriate end points for SOAP; I'm just wondering if there are any issues or gotchas with this kind of set up that I need to be aware of.

There are no known issues with using our service with AWS servers.

Like any other server it needs to meet the min requirements including making sure that PHP is compiled with SOAP and that  you are able to make outgoing requests to port 20095 from your server:

Leila,

Once concern I do have is that we will use autoscaling, with multiple web-heads behind an ELB (elastic load balancer).  This means that in general, our hosts may not have "fixed" IP addresses.  IIRC, you want a host originating requests on 20095 to register their address with your system, yes?

The reason I'm emphasizing this is that if it's a requirement, we likely need to set up a proxy of some kind at our end that will have a fixed and known IP address.

Thanks,
Rob

Recently we dropped the IP address as a requirement for sending emails.

We use it for debugging issues with email so we still want CiviSMTP users  to put it in however it is not a requirement for sending emails through our service and is not being checked anymore when emails are sent through us.

So in your case you do not need to worry about setting up a proxy or a fixed ip address, just input current IP address in the settings. If there is ever an issue and we need your IP address we will contact you.

Hope this helps,
