Receipts no being sent. What's everybody doing?

Hi,

I've had this problem for a while. Once a contribution is made the user sees the following error:

authentication failure [SMTP: Invalid response code received from SMTP server while sending email. This is often caused by a misconfiguration in Outbound Email settings. Please verify the settings at Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Outbound Email (SMTP). (code: 535, response: Authentication failed for Mailsender - authflat/cram-md5 - wrong password)]
<---End--->

This means that the transaction completes but no receipt can be sent. I believe there's a lot of using Civi for non-profit work and donations are tax deductible pending a receipt.

So, since this is a permanent bug that we can't fix, can't afford to hire somebody to fix, I'm wondering if there's a anybody else in a similar situation and what they're doing about the receipt problem?

I think you need to talk to your hosting provider about what your smtp settings should be - you configure them

http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/setting/smtp?reset=1

Mostly for smtp you set authentication to 'No' - but your provider may require a password - & you may be entering it incorrectly :-(

If you have no joy with your provider you should consider moving to a host that specialises in Civi (e.g. CiviHosting, Koumbit) because it will probably make your life easier.

JulesM, you could also try using mail() as your Outgoing Mail service instead of SMTP.

Thing is, it was working fine before. I updated to 4.1.3 on a Joomla 2.5 installation and that's when it started getting hairy. I had a post in this thread:

That thread went on to solve somebody else's different problem.

But like I said, was told that it's a bug that won't be fixed until the next update. So thus my question, if it is a permanent bug, then I cannot believe that I'm the only one with this problem, so what's everybody else doing about not being able to send receipts? If it's not a bug, which is looking more and more likely, then there's something else amiss and the previous diagnosis is wrong.

Do you use CiviSMTP? Have you asked them about this error?

Yes, I use CiviSMTP. And when I asked I was told it's a bug and neither CiviSMTP or CIVICRM are willing or able to help. It seems that the error somehow falls into a category where neither of them are at fault or can offer any solutions. So I was told that it's a bug and we'd have to hire somebody to fix it. Or hope that it gets fixed by the next update.

Who told you it was a bug? If so, did you file a bug report on the Issue Tracker? If not, please do.

The CiviCRM team fixes bugs in CiviCRM. If they can reproduce and isolate the problem.

No to both of those.

All I have is the error that keeps coming up.

Sorry I'm taking so long to reply to these and I really need to get better at this. That being said, resources like online petitions are now not available to us and sending receipts for donations are a pain.

So I'm not sure what to do next.

Your error appears to be something CiviSMTP can fix. If they can't or won't, then (at least for the sake of debugging!) you should try a different method of sending email such as mail() or use the SMTP of your host. If either of those works, then you have a better idea of where the problem is.
