What does "Group Type = Mailing List" actually do?
September 03, 2012, 06:54:30 pm
Hi,

I have two groups, call them A and B.  Group A has its "Group Type - Mailing List" checkbox checked.  Group B does not.

Yet, when I create a "New Mailing", both A and B are listed in the "Include Group(s)" and "Exclude Group(s)" lists.

So... what is the difference between a "Mailing List" group, and a non-"Mailing List" group?  In other words, what does the checkbox really do?

Thanks!

(CiviCRM 4.1.5 on Drupal 6.)

Anything unusual about your site eg multi-org/level or somesuch. Otherwise can you confirm behaviour on demo?

When I inherited it, it was a multi-org site.  I then abandoned the multi-org and switched to single-org.  By "switched", I mean I installed a fresh copy the CiviCRM php code, and hooked it up to the legacy MySQL database using the "site transfer" instructions in the wiki.  I did have to track down the table that joined the contact records to the CMS users, and (via myphpadmin) delete all the joins, as previously there were users coming in from the multiple copies of Drupal.

However, it does appear there is some other multi-org stuff hanging around inside the database.  So maybe that explains it.  Specifically, when I edit a membership, there are 2 "Membership Organizations".  I've been trying to rename one of them and delete the other.  We only need one.  However, I cannot find anywhere inside of CiviCRM to make these changes.  It makes sense that this would be a legacy of the site's previous multi-org incarnation.

It there a recommended way to do a clean transfer from multi-org to single-org?

I could export all the contacts, memberships, contributions to CSV, and then import them into a clean install.  But it would be a lot of work to redo all the various settings, and to recreate all our groups and access controls.
