Mailings now bounce 100%, never used to
March 03, 2008, 07:22:38 am
Hello,

Our last four mailings have had 100% bounce. This hasn't been an issue before. Here is what the CiviMail report gives us:

Code: [Select]
Bounce Type: Invalid
Bounce Reason: No Such User Here

Those are the error messages we get for all failed e-mail addresses. Our configuration hasn't changed since we initially setup CiviMail and we have been able to successfully send out mailings in the past.

Does anybody know what I can do to attempt to solve this problem?

We are using CiviCRM 1.9 and Drupal 5.4.

most likely your hosting provider changed some smtp settings and the rules that the from / reply-to address should follow when sending an email. You might want to check with them of any recent changes

To add what Lobo said above, the best way to check it is to create a user representing yourself (with proper email address), create a group with that user in it and try sending the mailing to that group – if the mailing bounces, then the error lies somewhere in the configuration of CiviCRM’s SMTP environment.
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

i have the same symptoms for a mailer that i am trying to send.

In february we sent a mailer, and it went through (with html), and now i try to send the same mailer and i get 100% bounces. with a bounce type of "unknown," and a blank bounce reason.

if i make a super simple test mailer with no html, it goes through no problem.

how can a message that went through with no problem a month ago not be sent now, while a simple message can?

ill ask our host about any changes to smtp. did the above advice apply to both text and html based messages?

thank so much!

In your super simple test mail, are u using the same from address and same civicrm settings. make sure that the simple group has at least 3-5 addresses from the failed mailing group (for it to be a valid test)

can u also try the same simple test with the complete message.

I have increased the number of members in the test group to 6

the simple message went through to the recipients fine,

the february message doesnt go through to the test group,

the march message doesnt go through to the test group

the html template that both the feb and march emails with no edits made to it, go through fine!

i am going to read through the html of the march feb and template very closely, looking for potential problems.

i contacted my host about smtp and am waiting to hear back.

I got it to work... but...
Here is my update... (bug maybe?)

I did a complete read through on the html and found nothing worth changing.

I moved all the tokens into default footers. (that didn't fix the issue)

What i was doing to create the html message was using previous successfully delivered messages (and 're-using' them) and editing them in the 'compose on screen' box. I also tried creating the message from templates that weren't any different than the successfully delivered messages and was still getting 100% bounces.

What eventually worked was creating a "new mailing" from scratch. Even though this is not what I did before (before i used templates and 're-use mailer' functionality), it is the only process that works now.

When I make a mailer with all the same settings as all the other mailers that have worked from scratch, and paste the html into the compose boxes (plain text) and text into the text message box. the message doesn't give me the 100% bounce. The test message works and the entire mailing delivers the way it should.

Now this is where the 'bug' happens. If I save that message as a template and try to use it, i get 100% bounce, and if i re-use the mailing i will get a 100% bounce as well.

Basically the template and re-use functionality of civimail is broken, and once it did work but now it doesn't. There have been some  changes to the site, (module wise) but I don't know where to begin.

I contacted my host and they didn't do anything to SMTP settings.

I am going to move away from the compose on screen strategy all together and move towards uploading html files, but havent had too much luck for finding 'best practices.'

Any ideas? Thanks for your time!

It would be helpful if you could compare the email message created by the two different methods of creating a mailing - using the exact same message content (HTML message body, footers, etc)  - and diff the 2 messages to figure out what's different. Then post your results back to this thread.

I'm also suffering the same symptoms after replacing my codebase with a symbolic link to the codebase in another location.

Here's the end of the output of my bin/civimail.cronjob.php (note the first line especially) :

FYI, my issue was caused by temporary bandwidth limitations on the web server, which kept it from maintaining a connection to the SMTP server.
