a few thoughts and comments:

1. what civi version are u on? if still on 4.0.x might want to update to a more recent version.

2. Might want to ensure that you dont show any information to anon users before trying to show only view of organizations

3. note that joomla 1.5 had limited permission control integration with civicrm. this has been improved significantly in recent versions

In my first post I did specify the versions - Using Joomla 1.7 and Civicrm 4.0.8.  Upgrading civi isn't really an option at this time as 6 sites share the same database and we have made some layout amends to the map function.  I should have full control of the permissions using joomla 1.7.  any other ideas?  I have seen similar posts about the issue, some have blocked through robots, but that doesn't always work and doesn't solve the permissions issue.

unfortunately civi 4.0 did not integrate with joomla 1.7 permissioning. that feature came in 4.1

In that case - why is the joomla permissions built in to the backend of civicrm 4.0?

so to ask my original question - what are the required public permission settings to prevent civicrm individual records being crawl and indexed by google in addition to not allowing the public view of these records whilst retaining access to organisational details?

On the other hand - is there a way of hiding the address fields on the front end?

You could customize the template to achieve that.
