I've been on and off IRC the last few weeks trying to figure out how to send out event invitations from either Civi Event or the mailer.. I can't quite figure it out and I know there has to be a supported way so I figured I'd try and ask on this forum. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What I'm trying to do;
Send out an event invitation email... aka an email that uses a generic template that has things like <event.title> <event.date> <event.registration.url>... basic things like that, to a group.

I keep getting re-directed to the event reminders section on IRC. They tell me that will do everything. However, I can't figure out how to;
1. Send to a smart group
2. Send to a group and exclude another group
3. Figure out how unsubscibes work within the event invitation email

I figure I am just completely missing something because one would assume this is a common problem and that other companies would need a way of sending out invitations to the events they create and not manually add each person in the backend.
