Sent emails have no content

Using Joomla 1.5.xx
After searching all contacts in a particular group, using the option "Send an email...", include first name field, add content, send mail the email that arrives is blank. Subject line remains, but message body has no content.
In the list of activities for recipients the list shows the email as sent, and viewing it shows the content in text form (which I assume is normal) as though nothing bad went wrong at all!
Any ideas?
