Read Only or Limited Access Permission
September 19, 2012, 11:56:38 pm
Hey,

I have been trying to configure a drupal role that has very limited civiCRM permissions. I want this user to be able to search contacts and view their relationshsips, activities, etc. I do not want to give this user permission to edit any part of our data, to send any contact an email or to add any activities.

Is this possible? I have found that no matter what permission combinations i apply to this role, the user will always be allowed to send an email or add an activity under the "Contact" menu.

Is there a way to hack civi or drupal to remove these menu items for certain users?

Thanks!

Of course. In theory you can hack anything to do anything. The hook reference should get you started.

A simpler solution might be to use views to show the data you want to those users and not give them permission to use civicrm at all.

It is also possible to configure CiviCRM's ACL system to give a group of contacts only "read" permissions on another group of contacts or for all contacts.  It's slow if you have a large database of 10,000+ contacts but it can be a useful way to secure certain data.

Try CiviTeacher: the online video tutorial CiviCRM learning library.
