De-dupe rule suggestions
September 22, 2012, 03:07:20 am
A couple of de-dupe rule suggestions:

1. Currently all the de-dupe rules that come as standard with Civi show an 'Edit Rule' option but it is not possible to edit any of the 3 Individual In-Built rules. Is it possible to remove the Edit option from these rules to avoid people being confused?

2. The Individual Strict In-Built rule is the one used automatically for online transactions but it comes with only one field - Email with a weight of 10 and 10 as the weight threshhold to consider contacts matching. If a couple share an email address (not best Civi practice but many do), this rule leads to records being over-written by mistake. Would it be better for this important rule to include First Name, Last Name and Email as standard?

Hoping this makes sense!

Hi Lindsey

We are actually looking at this now as part of the Bristol Civi Sprint.
There is a plan to change the Find and Marge Duplicate Contacts page layout so that the terms used (strict and fuzzy) make more sense and there is a cleaner layout. As part of this the default install will hopefully have different reserved rule names which include the work 'optimized'. Generally it is still useful for people to be able to Edit the reserved rules so they can see what the reserved rule elements are.

The Individual Strict In-Built rule being set to email only is a standard default that works well for many different cases. Where you do think that you have a particular case you are best setting up a new Rule, with the fields your contacts are likely to match on, and set that one as the default.
