Don't forget detlev, they are working on sepa too with their german organisation.

I'm asking him to join in and update us on the status on their side too

Hi you all!

Yes, I am still alive, and sorry for having overseen this thread until now. Thanks to Xavier for inviting me.

The organisation I am mainly working for, digitalcourage.de, has implemented CiviCRM early 2011 in order to manage our contacts, memberships and contributions.Since there are a number of functional requirements specific to Germany, that are not properly addressed in CiviCRM, we had to implement several modifications and enhancements, which to maintain is a big issue now.

In order to ensure a long time support, we founded together with a number of german NGO's an association called "Software für Engagierte e.V." (sfe-ev.org), in order to manage these enhancements in a common effort and to provide training and know how exchange between CiviCRM implementors and users.

One of our main topics is direct debit: In Germany, support for direct debit is crucial for using CiviCRM, since about 90% of the contributions for most NGO's are coming via direct debit. However, the current german direct debit system will be replaced by the new SEPA direct debit system, until February 2014.

At SfE, we are currently starting the design and implementation phase of the SEPA direct debit system. A first implementation shall be released in February, 2013. Therefore, we should keep in close contact - regarding the existing code, finalizing the workflows and requirements, and getting our solution upstream.

Belgium has introduced SDD three years ago - perhaps I can save you some pain and time by sharing hard-learned lessons ...

1. involve the 'lead banks' - those who actively push the SDD introduction if any)
2. banks tend to stretch and interpret the XML format they accept -- I actually crashed the banks SDD batch by introducing a nonexisting bank account no
3. there's quite a bit of work on the product definition of an SDD-based fundraising product, and on the back-office process which drives it, to consider if you want something easy and slick
4. the value is in recurring SDD -- I suggest focusing on that, since one-off SDD's are pretty much the same approach.

From the UK perspective it would be good to get exposure to the dev if possible? We can then work out what we will need to do in order to ensure UK Direct Debit processing can be built into the process.

Looks like some form of get-together would be nice. Detlev could fill us in on the status of the SDD effort in Germany, Parvez on the DD effort ...

Conceptually, DD is governed by the pattern of a mandate/authorization (often a legal concept) to withdraw money from the debtor's bank account, either once of multiple times. The complexity would be to have a single module to register a DD authorization, and several backends to integrate with eg. the Dutch incasso system, SDD in general (with national interpretations), UK DD, ... which will definitely include
  • a management screen for authorizations
  • a batch generator for payments to export
  • a way to import statuses of payments
  • hooks to handle the success/failure of a payment (including soft/hard bounces due to insufficient credit or account closure) and its effect on the mandate/authorization and a possible recurring contribution/subscription/...

Yep, this is the way we've done the UK direct debit work - one extension that deals with the process of direct debit authorisation and setting up the relevant civicrm recurring entities and one extension per gateway for authorisation. In the UK you dont really every talk directly to the bank, its all done through third party software which is mostly web based.
