Trying to understand Timelines
October 01, 2012, 12:22:56 pm
I get how timelines work but I'd like to know of any use cases for having more than one timeline. Can anyone help?

Thanks

  • CiviCRM version: Always the latest!
  • CMS version: Drupal 6 mostly, still evaluating 7.
  • MySQL version: Mix of 5.0 / 5.1 / 5.5
  • PHP version: 5.3, usually on Windows

Here's two:

1) Suppose the first 3 activities in a case type are always followed the same way, but then the fourth and subsequent ones require a decision based on what has happened so far in order to branch one way or the other. At that point you might use the Add Timeline on the manage case screen to add one or the other branches.

(You could argue that an org's operating procedures should be strictly defined and so this decision could be made automatically based on the existing activities and their outcomes. Even if an org operates this way, it can be complicated to write up such a rule in a way a rules engine could use it, or via custom code, so doing it manually is an option.)

2) The redact or QA audit feature on the manage case screen might not use the standard timeline.
