Possible translation issues

Sorry that this post is in English but I do not speak french. I have been informed of the following potential translation errors in the French Canadian translation file and wanted to bring them to your attention in case any of them are valid.

Province/Territory should be Province/Territoire not Province/État
Values for credit cart expiration need to be translated. Month should be mois and year should be année
Country should be Pays

I may have more. If I do I'll add them to this thread. But to reiterate I do not speak French and am only passing down information passed on to me in the hopes that it is helpful.

Hi,

For the credit card, might be something specific to the payment provider you use (that might not be translated)

Could you suggest your colleagues that have spotted the problems to join the french canadian team and modify directly the translations there?

Thanks for the feedback!

Regarding province/state vs province/territory: that's an interesting observation. Technically, it's correct, but I haven't found any examples online that implement it that way. Most canadian-specific organisations had only "Province". I'd favour fixing this bug instead: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-10509  i.e. depending on the country, we should display a different label. Canada should be only 'province', United-States should be State, France should be 'Département'.

For the "month" and "year" fields in credit card payment block: I noticed that bug recently as well. Not sure if it's a regression or if it was always like that (in the past, I used a custom translation function to send strings to Drupal). The problem is that the string is not picked up by the 'extraction' scripts.

On a client site, I fixed it temporarily by adding it to the translation file. I however *strongly* suggest against relying on this, because it will cause you headaches when you upgrade CiviCRM later on. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. In the mean time:

- install gettext ("apt-get install gettext" on debian/ubuntu)
- cd civicrm/l10n/fr_CA
- msgunfmt civicrm.mo -o civicrm.po

add to the end of file:

msgid "-month-"
msgstr "- mois -"

msgid "-year-"
msgstr "- année -"


Recompress the dictionnary:  msgfmt civicrm.po -o civicrm.mo

Thanks for your assistance. Regarding the province/territory issue you are correct that most Canadian sites would simply put Province, but it more politically correct to have Province/Territory, which should be especially important for any Federal or National agencies.
