Hello - I'm just getting going with CiviCRM and CiviMail and am successfully using it to send out one-way email messages. We are using Google Groups to do our mailing lists where we need participants in the list to be able to mail each other. However, I'd love to either get rid of Google Groups or synchronize the two as we are having to maintain two separate lists. I have searched and searched for a way to do this without luck. Does anyone know of a way to synchronize my CiviCRM Mailing Lists with my Google Groups lists? Or maybe just assign an email address to my CiviCRM Mailing List so participants can mail to it (I guess this is more risky as we could run into spam problems).

if you are using drupal you may want to read up about og_mailinglist

using organic groups in place of a maillist may seem overkill but it provides a 'space' for the group members to discuss things. they can reply to emails, and that gets added as threaded comments on the node - and sent out to all the group members.
new posts will create a node in the OG and also be sent out to members too.
so you get an onsite archive - people can opt to either engage only via email, or via website.

may not suit your needs at all but it certainly meets some use cases nicely
