I came across this the other day. I won't attempt to describe the issue in full, as they have given a good description on their own.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, is there a reason that membership fields aren't available when exporting contacts?

IMO the short answer is that there could be more than one membership for each contact and there is no one size fits all answer for what to do in the situation where there is more than one contact
