(Not) counting people for CiviEvents

My database is doing funny things at the moment, and I'm still on 4.2.1 so it may have been fixed, so it may be just me but...

...In a current event I'm using price sets. We're selling tables for an event (1 table = 10 participants) which is fine. I'm also registering table guests (1 guest = 0 participants, because they're already counted in the tables) once we know who they are. If I try to set the table guests count as "0" I get a warning. If I leave it blank (which the guidance suggests should amount to zero) the guests are being counted as "1" as attendees towards the total.

The event is therefore filling up too fast. I can work around this easily so it's no hassle - but is anyone else seeing this and is it a bug?
