Categorized content for newsletters/rubric or integration with CMS

We want to send newsletters to a group of subscribers with different interests.
People can subscribe to different categories/interests and content is generated according to people's interests.

Some systems (like mailchimp) offer this functionality, it would be a nice addition to Civi

I've also thought about this functionality for CiviCRM, along with A/B testing etc.

Ultimately, we're talking about a major investment of time/effort, and so far haven't found sufficient interest from folks willing to invest in such a feature.  If you (or folks you work with) thought that was worthwhile, it would be a great addition to CiviCRM!

That said - last time I looked at this, I thought that another way to get this functionality would be with a third-party tool, using the CiviCRM API to actually send the mailing through CiviMail.  Last I looked (6-8 months ago?) the API functions to send a mail through the API didn't exist yet - but I also thought I read subsequently on IRC that this is now done.  I haven't looked.

If you need this functionality but don't have the funds (or time, if you're a programmer), perhaps it's worth checking the API and seeing if there's an easier way to meet your needs?

Not sure how up to date this module is - but seems like an interesting direction, worth investigating if you have some resources.
