Installing 4.2.2 on Drupal 7.15
October 11, 2012, 03:38:58 am
Modules won't activate.

Downloaded 4.2.2 for Drupal Tarball from sourceforge, uploaded to server used ssh to untar, ran install set up dBs, ensured Default folder was writeable, got the green light, clicked install, pushed to 404, modules not activated, no settings file for civicrm established on the defaults folder. I have followed the install instructions to the letter. How can I ensure that it can be installed? I host with Dreamhost?

You wrote "clicked install, pushed to 404" which I think means that when you clicked the Install button for the CiviCRM installer, you ended up at a 404 Page Not Found error page. That is of course not what is supposed to happen. You should see a success message. Anyhow that is why the install failed--someone went wrong at that step.

If you get a 404 page I would ask your host for assistance.

No, I have seen a similar response across the forum. Folders are created under default/files for civicrm, but NO settings file is created under default. 404 error is a page not found error, simply put, the install process fails and the modules are not activated on the drupal installation. I know I should be seeing a success page and modules should be activated, this put simply is not the case.

I don't recall any such reports, but perhaps there were. Anyhow, if you get a 404 page I would ask your host for assistance, perhaps there is something in the error logs.

I think it must be a host issue. I did get a version working (just) but the success page dod not come up, instead it went to you already have civicrm installed. I will get in touch with dreamhost to find out what's going on. its a real pain though as I hope that civicrm might answer some headaches at work.. If I get a response and am eventually able to load up civicrm I'll post back solution here.

CiviCRM can take care of headaches, but using the wrong hosting can create headaches. Please note that the CiviCRM team says on the About CiviCRM page:

We encourage users to consider Virtual Private Servers (VPS) OR (semi) dedicated hosting OR shared hosting from a host with experience hosting CiviCRM. Please review our Hosting provider information page for hosting options.

Have now set up a VPS, however first trial of load up failed, same issue again, I did contact dreamhost, they too recommended VPS. would it be worth me trying an older install?

I suppose you could try to use an older version to install CiviCRM and then immediately upgrade. But firstly I wouldn't expect an older version to work if the latest fails and secondly, even if it did work, the first thing you would need to do is upgrade to the latest. You certainly don't want to be stuck using an outdated version.
