Hello / previous demo sites
October 12, 2012, 11:46:23 am
Hello Forum,

Allow me to formally introduce myself. My name is Jason Whatley, and I reside in the Beautiful North Georgia (USA) mountains. I've only recently started responding to posts on the forums, and I find it to be a wonderful feeling to help someone get through their issues. I am a relative n00b to CiviCRM, I had not even heard of this program before February of this year and v4.0.8. I am also currently considering a  change in my course of study from networking to programming, in the hopes that I can be of more assistance to CiviCRM's users by understanding how the programming works. As it stands, I am reduced to scouring the forums looking for posts that pertain to less technical subjects. This being said, I have no problem tooling around on the demo site to try and figure out solutions to Users' issues. The problem I've run into is that not everyone uses the current version (I am aware that the demo site constantly changes and is always between the current stable version and the next release).

My question is: Do the demo sites for versions prior to v4.1 still exist anywhere on the internet? It would be cool to be able to check out a few ideas for Users who (for one reason or another) can't (or haven't) upgrade to the current stable version. it would also be nice to end the 'Please upgrade to the newest version so we can answer your question' responses that turn up every now and again.

I hope to one day attend a training seminar or CiviCon, however, my company is not yet at a point financially that will allow me to justify the necessary expense required to do so. In the mean time, if I post an answer that will not work, propose a solution that does not exist, or manage to step on someone's toes, feel free to message me and let me know. I'm here to help where I can, but I too am still learning.

With Warmest Regards,
Jason

p.s. Thank you Donald Lobo, Dave Greenberg, Coleman Watts, Kurund Jalmi, Hershel, petednz, and everyone else who do their best to help CiviCRM users understand everything that is going on.

Hi Jason - Big thanks for stepping up and helping folks on the forum - much appreciated and super helpful in growing a welcoming community! If you find yourself wanting another opinion or pointer on solving a particular gnarly issue - maybe jump on IRC and see if anyone there can give guidance. If you let me know your IRC handle I'll certainly "look out for you".

Regarding older versions - I'm not aware of any on the public internet. One possible solution if you have a decent laptop would be for you to install a few older versions locally. The installation files are all available for download on Sourceforge:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/civicrm/files/civicrm-stable/

... and you can run several compatible version of CiviCRM inside a single Drupal install using Drupal's multiple sites feature.

Check the second set of steps this page for more info on that (can be a different version of CiviCRM with each Civi DB):

will do - plus that is the same for everyone and IMO the best answers are a mix of knowing about a cool bit of functionality, knowing about a work around, thinking differently, based on your own experience / a different opinion. also actually answering other peoples posts is a really good way to learn about civi.

v. good to have you helping out and forward to meeting you in the real world some time soon.

also looking forward to seeing what you do with that domain of yours - give us a ping if u think we can help out :)
