Huge number of bounces

hi,
on october 14 at 1:15pm, est, a mailing was sent out to 1,717 recipients. the bounce rate for that mailing was 36.25% and the sender is positive that many of the addresses that bounces are, in fact, legitimate.

the bounce reason in the mailing report is primarily this:
"Received: from Unknown (HELO civismtp.uas.coop) (127.0.0.1) by sh3.civismtp.org (qpsmtpd/0.84) with ESMTP; Sun, 14 Oct 2012 12:19:53 -0500 Received: by civismtp.uas.coop (Postfix) id 886251E1D6; Sun, 14 Oct 2012 12:19:53 -0500 (CDT) Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2012"

can you tell me what this means and why so many of his emails bounced?

we are running civi 4.1.3 and drupal 6.26.

Everything looks normal on our end.   Our logs are showing more than 500 bounced emails from nero.afsc.  The reason is the recipient address or user is unknown.

Can you please send an email to civismtp@uas.coop with a few of the addresses that you know are legitimate ( but were bounced ) so I can investigate more specifically?

Also, the text that you are seeing in the mailing report is what we are given by the receiving mail server when there is a bounce.  What you are seeing is probably truncated and the actual reason for the bounce is not displayed.  I have opened an internal bug to fix this so that we will send only the pertinent information on a bounce.

i hope you are doing well.

thanks for the prompt reply. i will send the email addresses as soon as the staff person sends them to me. it's odd because there was another mailing sent from the same site at 2:57pm est on the same day and there were no bounces for a recipient list of 1,388.
